Juneau Icefield and wilderness Canada

David Edwards was the university expeditions advisor for the Royal
Geographical Society when he got tired of hearing of others’
adventures and realised he needed one of his own. Join him as he
heads for the wilderness of northern Canada to explore the Juneau
Icefield on the Canada/Alaska border, in an area accessible only by
float plane and boat, at the headwaters of the Yukon River. But the
quest for wilderness did not always go smoothly and Plan A was
thwarted by a fast river and bad maths....
Using striking images David will share the stunning glacial
architecture he encountered, and the difficulties of travelling in
remote areas, threatened by bears and crevasses. En route,
travelling along the Alaska Highway and detouring into small
settlements and ghost towns allowed him to meet gold panners and a
variety of interesting characters. He came away having had his
adventure but also having gained an appreciation of a remote
Canadian way of life. As a trained geologist David also has a keen
eye for landscape interpretation and will share his insights from a
fascinating part of the world.
