A Ranger at the Grand Canyon

David worked as a National Park Ranger in the Grand Canyon, responsible for explaining its natural wonder to visitors and leading nature hikes. He explored much of the Canyon, taking over 900 slides, and has made several return visits. This talk will give insights only obtainable from someone who knows the area intimately.

Sunset over Dana Butte, Grand CanyonFrom the earliest peoples to live there, the first Europeans to discover it and its subsequent history, David will surprise and entertain. Beautiful flowers, treefrogs, the area's spectacular geology, history, and wildlife will all be explored. David will also detail the threats to this unique area and what remedies are being undertaken.

A Grand Canyon (or Pink) rattlesnakeThis talk has drawn large attendances every time he has given it. His intimate encounter with a rattlesnake is not the least of the highlights.......

David can make this talk available on either 35mm slides, or as a digital presentation.

A Grand Canyon bibliography

Here is a selection of books that help explain the allure of this World Heritage site:

Chronic, Halka. (1984) 'Pages of Stone: 4. Grand Canyon and the plateau country.' Published by The Mountaineers. ISBN: 0-89886-155-1
A non-technical guide to a geological tour through eight national parks and eleven national monuments, learning about seabed sediments, dunes of an ancient Sahara, a fossil forest - every facet of geology to delight lovers of natural history.

Powell, John Wesley. 'An exploration of the Colorado River and its canyons.'
A fascinating, well written account of the first descent of the Colorado river, by the man who would go on to be the first director of the US Geological Survey.

Schmidt, Jeremy. (1993). 'Grand Canyon National Park.' Published by Houghton Mifflin. ISBN: 0-395-59932-6
A nicely written, enjoyable read that at the same time gives you a great deal of insight into all aspects of the Grand Canyon. A good bedside read before visiting and a useful book to take with you. Recommended by many of the rangers at the park.

The Grand Canyon National Park bookshop has many fine publications too.
